On May 30th 1967, Lt Col Emeka Ojukwu declared the Eastern Region as the Republic of Biafra. With this announcement it was no longer possible to call the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) by this name, it was renamed the University Of Biafra. In June of 1967, Ojukwu went to Nsukka to address the students of the University of Biafra. He told them that he had recently also addressed the students of the Enugu Campus. He reminded the students that the essence of Biafra was for the people to free themselves from the Northern Nigerian oligarchy that was out to enslave everyone in Nigeria. He told the students that Nigeria was likely to start war soon and ended his speech by shouting "be ready!" A Month after Ojukwu made this speech, the Nigerian Army invaded the Biafran border town of Gakem in Ogoja and the civil war started.
