When the question, if bitcoin can be shut down comes up, one main reason is usually given. That it is a software that runs on different computers around the world, If they try, is as good as trying to shut down the whole computers in the world which is impossible. But right now, there is a new reason why bitcoin can never be banned Bitcoin is protected speech When Phil Zimmerman was charged for writing an encrypted software called PGP. The government said that it was as dangerous as guns and bombs. According to the law, Speech written down are called protected speech. A press company printed PGP's source code in a book and sold it abroad, and Zimmerman was never indicted or arrested. . In 1995, a mathematician Daniel Bernstein sued the U.S. government for blocking publication of his encryption program. The judge handling the case called it a language that has the same constitutional protections as a poem or newspaper article. This same law protects users who keep their own bitcoins printed on a sheet of paper or stored in a software wallet. The worst the government can do is to regulate it. Most likely this is what the US government have looked at, thus have not been able to ban the possession and use of bitcoin. Those traditional financial hardliners belief that bitcoin pose a threat to the existing financial system, that is why they are calling for ban, and giving it all sorts of bad name. But the hands of the governments are tied with the reasons above, like I mention ealier, the only thing they can do is to try to regulate it which china has done with a ban on ICO s and Bitcoin exchanges. It remains to heard when they will say is unlawful to own bitcoin. When that happens, am sure legal think-tanks will come out to defend it.
